#affiliate For this #tooltalktuesday I wanted to discuss a fantastic tool that I first shared about back in September of 2018 (thank you @pepetools_usa for your long time support of the page 😁)The Combination Disc Cutter 😍 if you design with circular elements you need one of these. My tip for today is I have been using it to quickly create the backplate for round cabochon settings! If you are new to this tool the way it works is you first you create a shim, you can make it out of copper, silver or brass (I used brass) it can be about the size of a quarter and you want to make one that matches the gauge sheet you will be using! 18 gauge is about the thickest you want to use in here, I tried 16 and it works but requires way more force. Once you have your shim put it between the plates on the opposite side of the disc to be cut. Then when you tighten the plates it hold both plates level. When the top and bottom plates are aligned it makes for a smoother passage of the cutting punch. Always use a lube on the cutting punch (I’m using Pepelube 😁) from there I like to pre-mark my metal with a sharpie to ensure I know where I’m punching and minimize waste on my sheet. A two pound brass hammer is ideal and with a few strikes I have a damn near perfect circle (no way in a million years I’m sawing anything close to this perfect 🤦‍♀️) I also used the center finder after punching a smaller circle so that I could create an open backplate for a prong setting.
