If you’re not familiar with these, they’re called heatless silicone carbide wheels. I was introduced to this style of wheel in college for quickly removing the leftover sprue off a casting.

These wheels are very sharp, but they don’t get clogged. They’re also designed to produce very minimal heat, so your piece doesn’t get super hot as quickly as it could. I still keep a little cup of water around so I can dip my pieces.

If I have to remove some excess metal I will start with these because they save huge amounts of filing time. I then file, sand and polish out the deep scratches the wheel creates.

Always use dust collection with this wheel. It’s going to create silver dust (or whatever metal you’re using) everywhere. Definitely wear eye protection and use dust collection.

This is a common tool available from many tool suppliers, I got mine at Pepetools (@pepetools_usa ). I like that they have different sizes of the wheel. I always had one that was an inch in diameter (25.4mm) , and now I have some of the smaller ones that are 5/8” (15.9mm) in diameter, and those are really great for smaller pieces and fit inside the cast in place ring in this demo video.

They are $7 for a ten pack and Very long lasting

I have an affiliate link for them. If you want it, comment “wheel” and I’ll send it over. I earn a little commission through your purchase at no extra cost to you.
